Prolactin and Hormones

Prolactin is a hormone which is produced mainly by the pituitary gland which is situated in the centre of the head just below the brain attached to the Hypothalamus. The pituitary gland is also known as the master gland which emits hormones to control other important glands throughout the body.

Prolactin in women is used to control lactation, menstruation and influences female ovulation. However, in men it’s purpose is less understood.

High Levels of Prolactin in MenHigh levels of Prolactin in men can cause Hypogonadism resulting in a low libido, impotence and a very low sperm count. Prolactin is naturally increased for short periods of time by

  • Sex/Arousal
  • Stress
  • Illness
  • Anxiety

Large amounts of Prolactin are indicative of a problem. Normally a pituitary Tumour called a Prolactinoma. Normally these Tumors aren’t cancerous and the resulting side effects of theses Prolactinomas can be quite easily dealt with using either medicine or surgery.A condition also known as Hyperprolactinemia describes raised levels of Prolactin in the blood.

Various things can cause Hyperprolactinemia such as Empty Sella Syndrome or a damaged Pituitary gland, sometimes it can be classed as Idiopathic¬† (or an unknown cause.) But yet again please don’t be alarmed just yet. This condition can be controlled and occasionally cleared up with the use of Dopamine agonist drugs like Cabergoline and Bromocriptine or even Quinagolide.
